A photo for a smile

My family moved around a lot since I was small and  we did not have internet those days, I had a hard time keeping in touch with my friends. Even now, I know very little people from my childhood or school days but I always enjoy meeting new people, making new friends.  One of the best way to meet people when I travel is by taking photos.  I used to like to take polaroid photos and had an old polaroid camera SX70 that I auctioned from ebday.  I would carry with me on my trips and it was my magic wand.

When I travel, aside from visiting some of the main tourist areas, I love to visit small towns and villages.  In the Middle East and North Africa, sometimes I would attract a lot of attention maybe because they are not use to seeing Oriental woman.  Sometimes they would come over to say hi to me or want to take  photos with me, offer me rides or tea. Once in a town in South East Turkey with very little tourists, so many people came over to look at me and surrounded me that the military had to stop and asked if I were a member of the Press.  Children and students especially love to follow me around and love to pose for me.  To show my appreciation of their friendship, I would take a Polaroid pic for them which they love very much.  The magic of photo is beyond words, I have been invited to homes, tents in desert, given food,  free camel rides...all in exchange for a polaroid photo!

I simply love to make friends with people from different countries and cultural background, this must be why I hate to join tours  because I would not get to meet the local people and befriend them. I love to make friends with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Male, female, young, old, rich, poor,  all does not matter to me.  My requirements are very simple, nice and kind.  You see in my profile pic, I was given a free ride on this dear camel  because of a polaroid photo, this dear camel loves me because she knows I love her homeland, the Sahara....

This photo is one of my favorite of all times and have appeared as my scrapbook photo here on G+ and in different places and publications.

Did you happen to see the sunset picture I posted last night from Hanging Rocks Plantation? It was a photo I took just 5 minutes prior to this one from the opposite side of the lake. (You can view it at https://plus.google.com/photos/118351515323229708433/albums/5635630987129921905/5770415989009452178.)

Living on the east coast, our sunsets take place towards the west, and is typically the direction I'm facing for most of the pictures I capture of the setting sun. But every now and then, when the clouds are "just right" on the eastern side of the skyline, I'm able to spin around and capture another magnificent light show.

If You're Not Careful, You're Gonna Poke Someone's Eye Out!

While walking through the barrio of Granada, Nicaragua On our recent +The Giving Lens workshop with the children of +Empowerment International,   we saw this boy holding a machette about half his size. We watched in amazement as he climbed up a pole and chopped of a dead useless cable. When he got back onto the ground, he started walking side by side with his friend, when, every other step, he proceeded to jab the tip of his machette within inches of his friend's left foot. As long as we watched them, he narrowly missed each and every stab.

Here's an oldie for #signsunday  curated by +Lori Carey and +walt sprinkle  and +Jonathan Davis. In late 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono put up billboards around the U.S. (don't know if they went up internationally) with a message that turned into a song a little over a year later. This was shot in Los Angeles, where I was in college at the time (yeah, about a million years ago).

Yesterday i was on tour with my mate Hans Findling to caputre the sunset on a mountain over Rorschach. After a very nice dramatic sunset a thunderstorm approacedh us. We actually didn´t expect such a heavy thunderstorm. I never experienced such intense lightning. After this shot we jumped in our car to be safe. Shortly after this Zeus showed what he has in his pocket - several extreme lightnings per second and extreme rain. We were so happy to be safe in our car and have some great images :)

Hope you like it :)

So busy with other work at the moment that I have not had much chance to shoot anything with any sense of purpose in while.  So, this week I finally had some time and in the middle of teaching my son to skateboard I popped back in to the house, while he was taking a break, grabbed the camera and  my old and not so trustworthy SB800 flash and set up a little shot.

Using HDR on a commercial interior job

HDR can look quite normal and plain, and can bring a good amount of $$ compensation when used like on this interior shot we did several years ago for one of hotel brands.
It was not possible to get all in one shot: fireplace, celling lights and bright sunny day blue sky outside. So, multiple exposures helped:-)

BTW, the similar example was used in our e-book about HDR photography: http://www.realistichdrbook.com/about-the-book/. Take a look, there are many interesting "before and after" examples of HDR there as well.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
