In A Grand Sweeping Gesture... Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe CA
Sometimes a moment changes everything.
------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of those images I almost tossed.
It would have been perfect if I could levitate about a 1000 yards to my left so I was shooting this in a graceful, open-air hover straight up the lake into that illustrative sunset. That was how I REALLY saw this shot. I take alot of photos like that from inside my mind... hovering at JUST the right angle in mid air. BOOM! Dream shot accomplished.

But alas, my self-hover mode is still at the manufacturer's and I had to settle for this sorta sideways angle. It bugged. Still does. I don't like to settle. But I'm trying to learn to be flexible so I can wave in the breeze and not break... kind of like those clouds there. Or like water... sometimes I say to myself: "Self... beeeeeee the water, flow around obstacles, but keep moving." Because I've noticed that when you do that, the landscape will shift around you in surprising and delightful ways.

Just a few of the thoughts that go with this photo that I almost tossed. Perhaps time will tell me that I should have, but that's OK and not even the point...  this is just me being the water.

Sunrise was a Bust

After driving all day I tried hard (and succeeded) to wake up for a 5am sunrise and I drove around that stupid lake looking for an opening through those stupid trees. Then the sunset came up and was acting up on the wrong side. Then I drove around the other side of the lake still with now view. Then I the gasoline light came on and I started worrying about getting stranded on the dirt road. Then it started to rain a lot. Then I started to give up and just skip the other spots and head into town.

That's about the time I rolled up to the scene on the side of the road and didn't even get out of the car and shot a couple of these shots.

What I should have done is saw this and stopped pursuing my other fantasies and taken advantage of a good thing.

The point is... even if the morning is a bust... you can still make things happen!

And you'll never come out empty handed

A Mountain River Close To Sunset (view large)
From my blog: http://www.niophoto.com/a-mountain-river-close-to-sunset/

Time for a color image again! This photograph was taken in the Swiss National Park in the Swiss canton of Graubünden (Grisons). This park is a great place to be for landscape photographers, especially in late spring and autumn. Plenty of great hiking trails and loads of unspoiled scenery and wildlife at hand!

The image features a typical rocky alpine river that is floating towards a trio of mountains in the background. The mountains are lit by the last mountain light as it was fairly close to sunset. I captured this image using my 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle lens. Shot it at 14mm to give a lot of depth to the image. No filters were used (quite an investment for this specific lens). The image was processed in Adobe Lightroom 4.1.

I had two alternative captures of this scene. One with and one without that old tree trunk to the right. I opted for the one with the tree trunk. Think the trunk balances the composition a bit. Was I right?

Snowshill in The Cotswolds is miles behind in the Lavender colour stakes this year, I guess it might improve in a couple of weeks from now, but I'm told it's nearly time to harvest this lot.  When compared to Faulkland in Somerset where I was recently, what it lacks in sheer purple it more than makes up for in endless shapes and volume, giving rise to possibilities for some great mono work.  I've done a load of Tilt Shift with these lines but some of the straight images I've got over the last few days just begged to be processed first.

The skies were magnificent for a time this morning, as you can hopefully see from the colour image in my last upload, and the flowing light travelling over the fields made for some irresistible opportunities.  When I want to carry the Zeiss 21mm ZF.2 together with the 24 & 45 PC-E in my bag, there's no room for my beloved 70-200 f/2.8 so I've taken to carrying a fourth prime in the 85mm f/1.4 which has a bit of reach with this trio.  It served me beautifully this morning when I needed to cut out the foreground and create this wonderful view.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
