Artist at Work

"My definition of art contains three elements:

1. Art is made by a human being.
2. Art is created to have an impact, to change someone else.
3. Art is a gift.

You can sell the souvenir, the canvas, the recording... but the idea itself is free, and the generosity is a critical part of making art.

By my definition, most art has nothing to do with oil paint or marble. Art is what we're doing when we do our best work." -- Seth Godin

From a recent wedding I shot (BTW, do me a big favor and click on the image to (a) see it large, (b) to get rid of the ugly black bars). I love watching true artists at work, like this guy was. Not even going to try to describe to you how good that place smelled when he was doing his thing.

Kayaking on Lake Siskiyou

While I was waiting for the light to get good on Mount Shasta, there was a bit of a light show developing on the other side of the lake as the lowering sun was poking through the clouds. These kayakers rode by which made this shot so much more interesting. I snapped away trying to get their paddles in an interesting position.

Getting ready to head down to the 1 Year Google+ Anniversary Photowalk in Santa Cruz. Looking forward to seeing old friends and connecting with other new ones!

Also, today is the last day to save 33% on prints. Jump on over to http://ericleslie.com/images and find your favorite shot :)

Back from an absolutely amazing trip – my photo tour couldn’t have gone better!  Since I go there so often, I didn’t think I would do much shooting – well, 3,600 photos later…  We saw so much amazing stuff including nursing and mating up close!  Back out the door – hope to share more over the next week.

I was looking for overcast conditions to try the new camera in a different type of light. Thursday morning turned out to be worth while with dramatic storm clouds, quite a nice session 2wks before Iceland.

Location: Maroubra, Sydney, Australia

Equipment: Nikon D800e, Nikkor 16-35mm, Lee graduated filters 0.6h + 0.9s.

Cheers,
Jerome.

"Heart of a Sunflower"
Denver, Colorado

While Fall might be my favorite season in my home state of Colorado, the two week window where sunflowers are in season is a close second. Every year massive fields of amazing golden sunflowers pop up around the Denver area. Why do I love this time of year so much (1st half of August)? Not only do I love sunflowers, but it is one of the few times of the year that Denver gets hit with dramatic summer storms in the afternoon, often providing epic sunsets behind thousands and thousands of sunflowers. Its a win win in my book!

This year I am offering a low cost 2 day photography workshop in Denver that covers one sunrise and one sunset, plus gives you acces to an hour long photo editing tutorial to show you how I edit my sunflower images year after year. If you are interested in more information, it can be found in the below link, if not..skip the link :)  http://www.colbybrownphotography.com/photography-workshops/colorado-sunflowers/

Camera Info:
Camera: Canon 1D Mark IV
Lens: Canon 100mm 2.8L IS Macro
ISO: 800
EXPOSURE: 1/30th of a sec at f / 7.1

I had to increase my ISO because there was a slight breeze the morning I shot this photo. That allowed me to have a slightly faster shutter speed and avoid the blur. f / 7.1 was chosen as it was the maximum aperture I could pick and maintain 1/30th of a second, which still gave me plenty of depth of focus.

Photo Editing Info:
In Adobe Lightroom I upped the highlights, clarity, vibrance and saturation a decent amount. Contrast was adjusted as well. I then jumped into Adobe Photoshop and opened the image in +onOne Software's Perfect Effects 3 to slightly increase both the sharpness and golden feel of the sunflower itself.

And now for something completely different... After posting images from the air show over the last couple of weeks, I thought it was time to post an image from a trip I made over easter to see my mum. While we were there a storm refused to leave, bringing big waves and sullen skies. Perfect material for a misty long exposure.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
