"River Of Gold"

Guanella Pass, Colorado is one of my favorite areas during Autumn and I have been visiting for a few years now during that time of the year. I came pretty close last year with getting the shot that I wanted with this scene, but still, pre-dawn wind was an issue as it almost always is right before sunrise in Colorado, especially in the mountains. This year though? I completely lucked out and had just about none at all. I was pretty excited knowing that I could finally get the shot I have been chasing for so long. This is one of them. I hope you all enjoy it—-John

Snowpocalypse

Our first night at Shirakawa-go greeted us with some epic snow. It was already hard enough as it is shooting at night. Add some heavy snow and tourists make it almost impossible. Still, I'm glad I was able to pull out some shots like this one despite the conditions.

I got a sweet 20x30" stretched canvas print of this photo today, I didn't know that it would be one of my favorite photos I took during 2011 until after I had looked at it in Lightroom. I recently sold my other 20x30" canvas so there was a big blank space on my wall, and I'm not going to lie I'll be a little bummed if I sell this one! ;)

Thank you to West Coast Imaging for their superb job in getting this printed and stretched! http://www.westcoastimaging.com

The Gathering

Title inspired by the wonderful and way too generous +Joel Tjintjelaar. Many will know I was one of the fortunate trio including +Sandra Canning and +Steve Hale who got to partake in Joel’s online mini-workshop. Firstly I think someone needs to explain to Joel that mini means a little, limited or small as the time and feedback he gave us was unbelievable. He was like a personal tutor as every time I or the others asked a question the reply was returned quickly (I don’t think he sleeps) and not only answered but elaborated upon. At times I thought he must be watching me type and had a response ready before I pressed ‘post comment’. Needless to say when his online workshop opens I recommend signing up asap and I’m not saying that lightly or because I was associated with this one. I’m even going to sign up myself if it’s not already full. Why? For me the results are clearly obvious, my images went from good to much better. Joel helped focus my attention on the important aspects of the image and how to realise that in post. Sandra’s image from the workshop was just featured on PhotoExtract (Feb 5th) as one of the top 14 of the day as was an image of mine on Jan 24 after applying some of Joel’s techniques from his tutorial.

So here is my image from the workshop, I’m really happy with this considering it was very windy and my filters were wearing out from repeated cleaning from sea spray but at least it was warm. While Joel will probably see things that he may do differently he provided me with techniques and a better workflow to realise my vision and that’s the great part of learning – you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Thank you again Joel and with your help I think I’ve finally worked out gradients and how to apply them properly!! Also thanks to Sandra and Steve as we all bounced questions and feedback to each other, it was a great learning experience for us all.

On my full spectrum calibrated monitor this looks great, my laptop (crappy screen) I can see a hot spot so hope it looks good at your end. Please direct the bad comments to Joel and the good ones my way. Thanks all.

David & Goliath

Long time ago since I posted my last image ;)

These two trees sitting on a small hill. I saw them first in last summer and since them I had a picture in my mind, that is very close to what you see now. And today weather conditions have been nearly perfect - light snowfall and a completely overcast day with a very diffuse light. So we went out shooting for the very first time in my new job and were testing some of the new lenses and of course the brand new 5D MKII :)

Moeraki Sunrise

I got lucky yesterday morning and struck some nice light. Managed to get a couple of good shots - I quite like this one as it is a little different than most of my Moeraki shots.

I hope you enjoy it.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
