Download Central Park Lake for $10

2008. Central Park Lake. San Remo towers in background. In 2008 I began to shoot with digital infrared. This was done with a camera that was modified to only transmit infrared to the sensor; at a spot by the willow trees where I like to sit down and get away from the noise and rush of the city.

Pixels: 8640 x 5760, $10 for High Rez file
Price is definitely going to change.

After a few posts in color I thought it would be good to post some B&W :)

When I see this building I think of a Klingon battleship ! Maybe it's just me with an overdose of stories with Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Raj and Penny ...

When you think you need two lights, use one light. When you think you need three lights, use one light. Lots you can do with only one light.

Black and white photography, like most photographers I know, continues to fascinate me even with all the methods for pushing digital images to their limits. With Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, Nik Software and a host of others, we have very accessible means to create black and white photos that mimic those taken yesteryear. I'm not knocking on creating digital black and white images (because that's what this album is full of), but rather in appreciation of the roots of my inspiration. Besides, it's fun to remove the color from the scene and see what a difference it makes.

Sometimes, I like to simply walk up to someone, camera at my side, and tell them how beautiful they are (or what a great smile they have, or how happy they look, etc). And then walk away. Many will see the camera and ask if I want to take their picture to which I occasionally reply "Nope. I just needed to tell you." It's one of the ways I like to pay it forward. And it makes me happy.

(pause)

That's sometimes. Other times, I say "absolutely."
And then take a picture. Or 2. Or 20. And then make sure I get an email so I can send them off to them with a thank you. It's another one of the ways I like to pay it forward. And it makes me happy.

Tonight is a NEW episode of LIFE Through The Lens and I have been invited to talk about the idea of Paying It Forward and how that relates to the photography community. With me will be the incredible +Robin Griggs Wood (who is working on a Mentorship program that has me incredibly excited)

So please join +Kerry Murphy +Kelli Seeger Kim +Tamara Pruessner +Karen Hutton(can't wait to hear her say my name) +Ron Clifford +Tana Teel +Anna Nguyen tonight February 28 at 6pmPT/9pmET live on +Karen Hutton's stream or www.vidcastnetwork.com with +Keith Barrett

The Underground Lake

There is a series of cave systems that run under the huge mountains of Guilin in southern China. Reed Flute Cave is one of the more famous ones so I made a slight detour to go check it out. Like most places in China, there were a good number of tourists around so I quietly waited for them to pass so that I could have the place to myself and take pictures. The problem was that they would turn off the lights as soon as the tourists passed by so I was often left in the middle of a huge underground chamber with nothing but my cat eyes to guide me to safety. It was a little bit eerie, but all together awesome! I would point my camera at the ceiling and leave the shutter open for minutes at a time to collect all the faint light reflecting off some distant stalactite.

I finally made my way to the largest chamber where a small lake made a perfect reflection of the alien-looking rock formation on the other end. As I was waiting for my camera to gather all the light, my mind started to wonder what was lying deep in this ancient underground lake. As I kept staring at the dark water, listening to the single drops of water sliding off the stalactites and delicately swan-diving into the lake, I started to feel a hypnotic pull to walk into the lake. Lucky for me I was traveling with my guide, Bart, who tripped over something, made a loud noise and brought me back to the present moment … and that is why you hire a guide, ladies and gentlemen. They can keep you from taking a dip in scary underground lakes.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
