" LLR Falls "

Lower Lewis River Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Southwest Washington State. This waterfall is constantly changing throughout the year. Every time I have been up here it's been so different than before!

Shasta isn't just a Soda

As I drove from Oregon to San Diego I stopped along side the road to get the shot... I was even tempted to get out of the car... but I didn't.

"Winter Village" A second image using some strong tone mapping to create a storybook look to an already beautiful and pretty village. A little different than using straight HDR like +Trey Ratcliff and others do but it came out like I wanted.

A Day with the American Bison
http://viewsinfinitum.com/2010/01/13/a-day-with-the-american-bison/

Yesterday I mentioned I took a trip to North Dakota two years ago this week (see post at https://plus.google.com/u/0/103776299476527190352/posts/S8ABc4Tbssz ) and said I would have more to say about it. :-)

After photographing the landscape in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, North Dakota, I came upon my first American Bison in the wild. He was alone in a ravine using his head to bulldoze the deep snow out of his way so he could eat the grass underneath. That was the first time I wished my old Nikon D70 had the capability to take video. I had wanted to see a Bison (aka Buffalo) on this trip. I was so excited and only the -20 temperatures kept me from photographing him longer.

I returned to the warm car and continued on down the road. Just a mile before the western edge of the park I spied a whole heard of bison near a meandering creek. I took a few photos but I had to shoot across the car through the passenger side window. After a bit I was satisfied they were content with plowing the snow and grazing that I could continue on and find a place to turn around.

When I got back, they were even closer to the road and moving towards me! Not having any experience with large herding wild animals I continued to photograph them more comfortably from the driver side window as they got closer and closer until I needed to pull back the Nikon 80-400VR lens into the sub-200mm range (this was taken at 195mm plus crop factor). These gentle giants were obviously used to cars stopping on the road to see them. I bet many had lenses like mine pointing out at them, too. Some of the herd wandered past me within 10 feet and gave me a once over like this individual.

To say this was an exhilarating experience for me would be an understatement. Time to go and pick up my daughter at the end of her first work day was the only reason I left them. I thanked them for their cooperation as I slowly drove away. You can see more photos of the Bison on my blog using the link above.

I remember shooting this tree - I found it in North Warwickshire, it was quite an effort to get to even though I'd seen it from the road. It was the day I took out my Lee Grad filters for the first time - I wasn't very skilled, and scratched one of them almost immediately after I dropped it in about 2 minutes. I was very frustrated and impatient... It certainly makes me smile looking back - that was June 2010, about 18 months ago now. I've changed a lot as a photographer since then...

Top of the top...when one can go no more. ~Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawai'i.

Amazing Mauna Kea standing proud at 13,796 feet (4205 m) here on the Big Island. Last week, I found myself up at the summit for sunrise and sunset... on the same day! It was quite a long but very emotional experience to say the least. This was taken on my sunset journey during the first ever "Kona Photo Walk" hosted by the lovely +Cynthia Pyun . Also along for the "walk" and good company was +Mitchell Weinstock and +Kirk Shorte . So this was our crew and what an adventure it was. Thanks to everyone for the invite and hospitality!

Right place at the right time.

It had been a really busy night. We had already attended a devastating car crash, chased a stolen car and caught the driver and now we were responding to a burglary in progress. Awesome. Three males just been seen entering a property, we're four minutes away. Off we go - from the other side of town. There's nothing like hammering it across a busy town centre with an experienced blue light driver. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

It's an unmarked car, we switch off blue lights... headlights off... we don't want anyone to see us coming. No one... the property is empty, they've gone. Back in the car - the car has an 'attack cage', it's a dog cage which opens from the rear but also into the cab of the car, this allows the police officer to deploy the dog out of the drivers or passengers window. We see the boy, he has seen us and runs - the dog is already out the window. "STAND STILL", we get out the car, "stand still". The boy obeys. The dog obeys, he doesn’t bite, he stands his ground and waits for dad.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
