In the Dark

Some of you in my SFBay Weather circle (let me know if you wish to be added to that circle) may have seen my post this morning that I was headed out the door to the Marin Headlands.

When I got there, the gate was once again closed, so I hiked up to the other ridge top and spent a good amount of time shooting before work today. I did notice that the park ranger opened the gate shortly after I had gotten up to the top of this hill, so I guess I could have waited and gone to Hawk Hill instead (still before sunrise).

I am glad I went to this spot though, because I do not have as many morning fog shots from here. Now I have a few more :) I also met another photographer whom I recognized from Flickr (Mark Lilly), for the first time. He was kind enough to show me his panoramic tripod head set-up. I so want one - just need to figure out how to make that happen in this business.

It took a starry night to steal my breath away

Enough with the flowers and back to my first love, lightning! I live for the summer thunderstorms. They make the desert heat bearable. ;)

This is one from this past summer processed in B&W.

#LastCall for the night.

Many landscape photographers choose to only photograph natural landscapes. There is certainly nothing wrong with that but I find just as much enjoyment out shooting in the city much of the time. In fact, I just like to shoot...period. I guess that is why I am a landscape & wedding photographer...an interesting combination. :) Here are a few random urban images for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

I am looking for peoples feedback on these two images. Which of the two do you prefer?

Although this image is taken in last April, it gives me the feeling of how it might be at The Glacier Lagoon in Iceland today, when the weather is cold and the days are short.

I tried a self portrait at this location last year, but I have never been entirely satisfied with it. As I was driving through the thick fog at the Point Reyes National Seashore yesterday, I was inspired by the fact that these trees were enveloped by a wispy, dancing blanket of moisture. I decided to not do a long exposure this time. I almost always use my 11-18mm wide angle for my self portraits because it looks like I am standing very far away when I am actually fairly close (or at least nowhere near as far as I appear to be). But this time I wanted the tunnel effect, so I used my 24-70mm (Zeiss!!) and zoomed in at the full 70. I only mention this because I had to get fairly far away from the camera to get myself where I wanted to be in the frame. So to fully appreciate the scene, you have to imagine me setting a 10 second timer and running like a bat out of hell for about a 1/3 of a city block to this spot (hoping to end up as centered in the light and the road as possible). Fortunately, no one was around. I must have looked absolutely ridiculous scooting up and down this road. I tried at least six shots, so I also got some exercise!

I'm re-sharing Stories From Atlantis again because I've fluked another entry into the monthly Nikon In-Frame competition, so I'd really appreciate it if you could click the link below and vote for my image!

http://inframe.nikoncompetition.co.uk/Vote.aspx?id=01&country=uk

Unfortunately I wasn't successful last time out, but voting isn't a one way street - you could win yourself a Nikon Coolpix S9100 just for voting. Thanks very much for you support I really do appreciate all of the comments and interaction on here, G+ is great!

Shot this over the weekend with +Andrew Stockwell and Dave Simms from +NSOP. This is "Big River" in Rhode Island. It was dumping out while we shot which was fun. I know Andy got out to Devil's Hopyard later with more snow as well, can't wait to see what he got.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
