Bringing New Life To Old Photos
One thing I've come to enjoy about Google+ and other Social Media sites is how they've gotten me to think more about making and remaking images. This weekend I spent considerable time going back to a group of Zion photos I made in the first year of using a digital camera. Upon opening the #DNG files I saw all kinds of errors and room for improvement and reinterpretation. The resulting final Tiffs were like coming home from location with a new batch of images.

Another example is the Google+ daily themes. For todays contribution to #MinimalMonday by +Olivier Du Tré and #MonochromeMonday by +Siddharth Pandit I scanned my archives for a suitable image. The image I came up with below is one I've ignored for many years. Originally I was attracted to the composition and lighting but on viewing it on a monitor it was flat and dull with weak color. Today on second look it seemed an obvious choice for a drastic black and white reinterpretation and I'm very pleased with the result.

Blue Hour at the Helix - Singapore

Just a quick one so you Don't forget me ;-) Weather was not too good today, but I still try to get some decent shots while here in this amazing city. So much has changed, last time I was here (16 years ago) there were still many of the small Bamboo roofed transport boats were today you find Marina Bay and the Sands Casino ... However the Skyline is more amazing than ever.

Whoever wishes to keep a secret must hide the fact that he possesses one. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

When I was processing this image I felt sad for these two trees - so near, but just out of each other’s reach. I imagined their heartache each Autumn as the leaves from one tree sweep through the branches of the other, while still they can not embrace.

But then one evening as I was falling asleep, it occurred to me that I was not seeing the whole reality. That below the surface, deep under the snow and the soil, these two trees are likely entwined in a deep lifelong embrace, quite happily in each others arms.

They very nearly managed to keep their secret from me.

She Faded Softly Into The Background

I have been asked by several people to show how I take my floral shots. +Jonathon Pruessner took video of me taking a couple of shots this weekend and I am going to take a look at it and see if it shows my light set up and where I take a lot of my shots. As for this one, I initially thought it would be a black and white (and there are others of this flower that will be), but then this morning, I got up with a different idea. And it is now creamy-soft colors showing how the edges changed to a pink.

And of course, I am tagging this one #MacroMonday curated by the get-up-in-your-face ladies, +Kelli Seeger Kim, +Jennifer Eden and +Kerry Murphy!!

Wrecked - In March 1897, a howling south westerly gale swept up the Bristol Channel, bringing with it high seas, driving snow and sleet. Many ships soon found themselves in distress, among them the Norwegian barque SS Nornen which had tried to ride out the storm in the lee of the Lundy Roads but had found her anchors dragging. She was being driven towards Berrow mud flats. The crew desperately tied to save her, but were fighting a losing cause. The ship's crew of ten, together with their dog were eventually rescued, but this is what became of their boat.

This was shot during a trip with +James Clegg to Berrow Beach, Somerset. We arrived just as the tide reached the wreck. It was blowing a gale. I took a few pictures, but this is the only one that didn't suffer from the extreme winds. Weighing down the tripod would have just encouraged it to sink in the wet sand. Under the circumstances, I'm pleased with how it turned out!

Kenny, Tug Boat Man

The one thing you can be sure of when out and about in Liverpool is that you will come across a lot of old sailors that worked out of the ports here. This was one, his name was Kenny and he worked the tugs out of Africa of all places, loved what he did and hated the fact he had to retire, the gold tooth came from his time out there, He says his wife will not let him be buried with it when he goes, not with the price of gold this day and age. Some people you can talk with for hours, Kenny was one.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
