Stairway to Heaven - Bianco Ridge, Piz Bernina, Grisons, Switzerland

#PlusPhotoExtract by +Jarek Klimek
#MountainMonday by +Michael Russell

The stairway to heaven, famous Bianco Ridge, leads nearly to the summit of Piz Bernina, 4048m / 13280ft. Before and after the snow ridge itself, nice climbing awaits the alpinist. I remember this trip as a real highlight, as this snow ridge is extraordinary in it's shape, visible from far away and it's leading to the highest peak in the Bernina massif. I've enjoyed this beauty of nature together with +Daniel Arndt.

If you enlarge this photo, 1500px in width are waiting for you.

Well, I haven't contributed to #MountainMonday in what seems like ages. Given how inspiring the subject has been for my own photography, it's a shame. In an effort to right the ship, here is this week's offering :)

Jekyll Island, Georgia
When we were returning from Newfoundland we met a couple of super nice guys on the ferry. We shared stories about our mutual adventures in Newfoundland and it helped make the trip go faster. Mark and Bob told us all about the place they recently moved to: Jekyll Island in Georgia. A small, quiet, laid-back island with lovely beaches, great bike trails and a beautiful campground right across from the beach. The island is a state park and only 1/3 is allowed to be developed. We also heard we could get really good martinis there so we made it a must-see destination on our list.

The beaches were indeed spectacular and one beach in particular, called “Driftwood Beach”, was unlike any other beach I have ever been to. Because it is a barrier island, it constantly looses ground on the north and gains ground on the south. As the land erodes, the sea and sand consumes and kills the live oaks leaving a boneyard of tree roots on the beach.

I will have more images from Driftwood Beach later this week.

A Delicate Sunset

A shot of Delicate Arch at Arches National Park in Utah, about 60 seconds before the sun fell behind the horizon. If you have never been to Delicate Arch before, don't be fooled by the seemingly short mileage of this hike--it's pretty tough! In spite of this, there were easily 50 people up at the arch for sunset. Getting a shot without people swarming all over the arch was a miracle. ;)

Shot Details:
Location: Arches National Park, Utah
Camera Body: Canon 50D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Filter: B+W Circular Polarizer
RAW, ISO 100, 28 mm, f/11
Multiple exposures blended using Enfuse.

I'm adding this a few minutes early (at least in my time-zone) for the "Be Free" weekly theme on #ActionMonday, curated excellently by +Adrian Buturca. Nothing says "free" to me like a lack of ropes. It reminds me of Pinocchio and his comment about having no "strings to hold me down". It's also incredible, the freedom we have to explore spectacular places when equipped with the right tools and technique.

Got back from a trip to desert country over thanksgiving. Weather called for blue skies and a no moon. I wanted to take that opportunity to do some night photography. Out there in the middle of nowhere theres very little light pollution and one can see the milky way with the naked eye. I wanted to capture the Milky Way against the famous Delicate Arch. This is my pick from the bunch of shots i took. Getting the composition right was a challenge with the pitch black darkenss and the bitter cold along with wind didnt help. The arch was light painted using our LED headlamps.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
