How many casings can you see?

I've been a little under the weather the last few days with a cold so have been pretty quiet but realised I hadn't submitted anything yet for this weeks #MilitaryMonday curated by +Joe Kaiser so here's the latest.

This was taken on a shooting range (where we all had a go - was great!) but I wanted to try to capture a shot with the shell casings exiting. We were shooting in 3-round bursts so I hoped to capture on casing. Once I took a look later I realised I'd captured all three rounds from a single burst!

I must have a great trigger-finger :-)

This is my addition to #MonochromeMonday, kindly curated by +Siddharth Pandit

This is the 5th image from my Vancouver Island series, created at the Ogden Point Breakwater in Victoria, Vancouver Island. This was created after my Michael Levin workshop, which was a game changing experience for me.

All feedback is good feedback :-)

Twilight at Point RoadKnight, Anglesea - Australia

As in the title taken at Anglesea which is about 40 minutes from my home in Victoria. It's another great little place and the best part there are lots of great image making opportunities. I need to get here more often.

Photographer at work taking pictures in the Virgin River Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah

Taken a couple years ago. We rented the neoprene suits. After the hike, the skin off the back of my knee was so badly burned from friction, that I had to abandon my planned hike of the Subway the next day. Hope to get back there next year.

The Camera You Have With You
#MountainMonday

I've been seeing this quote a lot lately: "The best camera is the one you have with you." This shot is certainly an example of that. Last month, I did the three-hour drive up to Picture Lake at Mt. Baker to shoot Mt. Shuksan at sunset. When I was almost there I realized I forgot my memory cards for my 50D... all of them... I had my Canon S90 point and shoot with me, but its battery was virtually dead, and naturally, I didn't bring a spare one of those either.

I decided to just finish the drive, it's a pretty spot even if you can't take any photos. I parked, grabbed the S90, walked around the lake and just tried to make the most of each of the 5-10 shots the battery let me take.

Shot Details:
Location: Picture Lake, near Mt. Baker and North Cascades National Park
Camera: Canon S90 compact
RAW, ISO 80, 10.7 mm, 1/500 sec, f/5.6

'The baker's apprentice' I shot this one on Sunday.
Inspired by the light of Vermeer and the works of DeLone.
I'll get around to a lighting diagram on my blog in the next day or so! :-)

My #MonochromeMonday image (curated by +Siddharth Pandit) is a bank tower in Nashville, Tennessee I shot during a photowalk Saturday. I used a B+W 10 stop ND filter to blur the clouds above and create the ominous mood. I later converted it to Black and White in NIK Silver Efex PRO.

The Carrier in the Fog

I just wanted to put this out there… that I’d love to be invited to land on a carrier… take photos… see awesome things… okay, I have put that out there... you can always contact wildcard at stuckincustoms dot com :)

I’ve been wanting to process this photo forever — I love carriers. This one in San Diego is open to the public, but I arrived too late to get up on the deck… So I was stuck on the ground level — but then a sweet fog rolled in to cover part of the carrier.

The State Dining Room (HDR) ( bit.ly/fr-state )

This is the state dining room in the Grandmaster's Palace in Valetta, Malta. Boy, those Grandmasters sure needed quite some space for dinner. ;-)

This was one of those occasions where they just wouldn't let me use a tripod. So, I had to take the 3 source images hand-held.

Do you shoot hand-held often? Are you good at it?

I'll Keep my Eye Out For You...

I was on a shoot with my friend LyAnna last spring in #boston in the #southend. We were shooting in an alley against a few doors and a brick wall ( Here is one of those shots, since I mentioned it http://goo.gl/NXiob). A group of homeless gentlemen (and they really were gentlemen) walked by, and kind of oogled over my friend who I was photographing. Her response was a cat-like growl, complete with the clawing hand motion. It really cracked these guys up.

So we stood around and talked for a while, exchanging information about where we all came from and what brought us to this moment. They were staying at a shelter called the Pine Street Inn, in #SoWa. I was snapping away of course, mesmerized by the weather-worn lines of their faces, their tactile camaraderie, and their incredible positive attitudes.

A moment later the man on the left asked me if I wanted a "cool picture." Usually I'm the one asking for a portrait, so it was great to have one proposed. I never thought that this was what he meant. I got a few shots of him alone, and a few with his friend. I chose this one because when I was sorting through the RAW files, this was the one that best captured the experience.

We gave them money to buy coffee, and they thanked us, laughing about the whole thing as they wound their way down the twisted alley. After they disappeared around the corner, LyAnna and I laughed about the whole thing too, while we bumped heads competing over the LCD, making sure we had the right focus. A moment later the rain began to fall, so we walked back to the car and drove home.

I edited a few of those shots later that day, but I never took a crack at this one. I decided to go back to these and apply an updated eye. Recently I've been inspired (understatement) by the street portraiture of +Alfred Pleyer, +Brett Cole, +Danny Santos, +Mihailo Radičević +Larry Monserate Piojo, +Alan Shapiro and +Mike Shaw(Especially his 2 dollar portraits, which is the reason I went back to these RAW files, since we gave these guys two dollars).

I guess what I'm trying to say is this- it's so easy to stay home, watching TV or G+ing until your eyes burn (OK, guilty of the second one). But there is a whole world outside, quite literally at your doorstep. It's never the same twice, and you will always learn if you explore it. The attitude exuded by these guys just humbled me. They have nothing, but they were keeping at it, facing each new day with a smile. Whether or not you are into #photography I would urge you to just wander and let the world show itself. Just keep an eye out for these moments.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
