First and foremost ... I'm a photographer

To somewhat reiterate one of my more recent posts about people wanting to "figure people out" (linky: http://bit.ly/n4chdD) I think that even we as photographers want to put people into certain categories. We want to know what gear people use, what they enjoy (or are good at) photographing and even how they edit their photos.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with this ... many of us specialize in certain genres and styles of photography. And, this can be a very good thing to do, since it's a way we can market ourselves and find clients looking for something specific. But amongst photographers we sometimes almost expect to only see certain things coming from certain photographers.

I love my job, I love creating stock photographs and cooking/photographing food. I'm extremely passionate about it, and it just so happens that it's the one thing that I can do and profit from when it comes to photography. But that's not all I enjoy ... I've started to develop a passion for landscape and long exposure photography (whether it's star photos, like in this post, or daytime images with my new Lee Big Stopper filter). (Oh, and a big thanks to +Brian Matiash for getting his hands on that filter for me ... and for the amazing, deep and insightful inspiration on this post ... yay!). ;)

I also think that part of this is being adventurous and pushing yourself outside of your comfort level. If I only stuck with "the regular" then I'd lose out on so many photographic opportunities, and also potential new loves and experiences because I limited myself to just one thing.

So get out there, try something new, step outside of your box and do/share the unexpected. Don't worry about what people think they want to see ... just do what you're passionate about, be yourself and you'll never be wrong. :)

Mountain Monday curated by +Michael Russell

Mount Shasta is the closest 14er to my home and it's in the backyard of the country my wife grew up in. This is the barn at Grandma's ranch. This was taken last year on Christmas eve. This photo has a lot of sentimental value for me.

This helicopter is worth more than some cities....if we had it 70 years ago, we could have ended WW2 in one week. These pilots were nice enough to allow me to set up my tripod and get 5 frames. They later saw this image on Flickr and contacted me for a copy.. In return they sent me a "squadron patch." I think that's cool.
re-post.

Under the Red

I had noticed this spot a while ago and thought it had potentials if only the pond in front of the rock formation was adequately filled with water. Unfortunately during my next 2 or 3 visits it remained stubbornly empty. On the day this shot was taken however the water level was just about right, not too deep to cover the rocks and shallow enough to show detail in its bottom. Problem was that the sky over the rocks was bare and the only activity in the sky was these two cloud formations that were way out of frame but at least moving towards the right direction. I thought that it was a far chance that they’d be in place by the time the setting sun had given them any color but I sat there waiting nevertheless and at the right moment they were cooperative enough not only to be in the right place but also to shape themselves up symmetrically to the rock formation below them!

Sometimes you have a dream, and you know you can't sit there and let dreams go by without chasing them, and so you chase it. And you know you can't give up until you've really tried, and so you try your hardest, and you give it your all...and somewhere along the line you think, wait, why am I doing this thing, I not enjoying this thing anymore, I chased this because I enjoyed it but I'm not enjoying it and it's also not working. I've given it my all, I'm not enjoying it and it's not working and I'm doing nothing but going further and further into debt and I don't have the money to do that kind of thing, especially for something I'm not enjoying and in fact maybe am starting to dislike with great fervor... So maybe you let the dream go, and perhaps that's exactly what you should do. And maybe it hurts to let it go, a lot of your soul went into that dream...but you know inside that you have to let it go, you have to let it wash away and find another dream to chase. Maybe not even such a distant dream from the first dream, maybe just a tangent away you'll find the dream that leads you to the sun, and along the way you'll have life to teach you because you'll have walked in your dreams instead of just dreaming them. And that is why your life is completely saturated in color, no matter where you land...

The bride preparation is one of my favorite parts of a wedding and a real challenge to photograph, but with the perfect light and the right angle, it's possible to make amazing photography.

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
