Happy Alaska Day!

A few people who follow me may know that I am a native Alaskan, and grew up in the city of Sitka. October 18th (today) is a big holiday in Alaska, right up there with New Years and 4th of July. It was on this day in 1867 that the Territory of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States. My home town was where that went down.

It is views like this (from the porch) that ultimately led me to pursue photography, and learn how to make better pictures. I am learning as much as I can so that when I go back I will hopefully be able to capture the beauty of this place to share with others.

FYI - Sitka is a "big" city with a population of about 9000 people. It is also the largest city in the USA.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Surviving the Welcome Feast

What do you do when you're in a village filled with warm and friendly people in a developing nation – and they welcome you with a feast?

The politically correct answer is you indulge and enjoy being their guest. For me, being a respectful guest meant I got terribly sick after indulging politely in the feast – and stayed ill for 6 months after my trip. http://www.catherinehall.net/blog/?p=7294

15-20 minutes prior to taking the last shot I shared on my stream, I stopped on the side of the road we were traveling on and captured the following image.

This was overlooking the mountains that surround St. Johnsbury, Vermont and grabbed my attention because of the bright moon that was visible, along with the beautiful colors the leaves were displaying. This was taken about 20-25 minutes before sunset, which allowed me to capture some great tonal details of the foliage.

I want to share my album with you, a long walk is mostly about my deams of walking into the unknown .
In my mind
a walk in crested wheatgrass
peaceful, serene, healing
my cares float away
on summer breezes.

Pre-Dawn Glow Over San Francisco
One of my favorite things about blending exposures is how you can get the smoothness of a long exposure with some of the detail of a shorter exposure added back in, as in the water for this image. For this result, three exposures were tonemapped in Photomatix software, which also helped to recover some subtle detail in the skyline silhouette.

For the Tuesday theme: #TonemapHDRTuesday curated by +Drew Pion and +Stephanie Suratos.

When first on scene after any collision it is important for me to leave the camera behind and help. Only until the ambulance & fire crews will I grab the camera and then start to record what is in front of me.

A Razor to the Sky

This is of the indomitable Fitz Roy at sunrise buried deep in the Andes, in the hinterland between Argentina and Chile. To get this shot, it was none too easy! First, I "woke" up after a sleepless night in a two-man tent with a drunk Russian. He had the weight and scent of a beluga whale with none of the charm.

The next morning, I trekked about a mile up the side of an icy mountain in the dark to get this shot. You have to be there right when the sun crosses the horizon at first dawn. This moment of peach-pink only lasts a few minutes.

This is definitely one of those iconic Iceland spots on every travelers list. Even though there are tons of images of this location floating around the world, it was still fun to get an one to call my own. This is my contribution to #WaterfallWednesday Thanks +Eric Leslie :)

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
