There is magic and wonder in the night. When our eyes are no longer expected to see full reality, our imaginations are freed.

This is my first ever contribution to #longexposurethursday curated by +Le Quoc and +Francesco Gola.

And it's fitting with #silhouettesonthursday curated by +Siddharth Pandit,
#thirstythursday curated by +Giuseppe Basile,
and #travelthursday curated by +Laura Mitchum.
Wow - that's a four-fer! :D

I am a little bit nervous posting this for a couple of reasons. One being no one other than +Nathan Wirth (my most awesome mentor) has seen my long exposures and also because I took a lot of artistic leeway with this image.

This fork is real - it is huge and spiked into Lake Geneva on the waterfront in a town called Vevey. But that is about the extent of reality in this image. +Johan Peijnenburg and I went there in the daytime - pretty much full noon actually! (he has his awesome version of the fork posted on his page - go see!).

I used a 10 stop hitech filter for this image to "stop time" and bend reality a bit. It left a horrid green/blue color cast, which normally I would have immediately dropped down to monochrome. But this time my inner mystic urged me to work with the color. A moon and a few stars later, here we are, in the full on mystery of the night. ;)

The fork is in the lake outside the doors to Alimentarium, Nestle's Food Museum. Here is a link that tells a bit about it: http://www.alimentarium.ch/en/la-fourchette.html

A large swell turns into a complex wave as it reaches the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

I've only photographed waves once in my life, and it was an incredible experience. I flew out to Hawaii on short notice for a final winter storm. Each day, we would wake up at the crack of dawn to go searching for a good spot to shoot, and most of each day was spent waiting around. Patience is a necessary skill for wildlife and nature photographers!

Special thanks to Norbert Wu for hosting me while I was there (he had rented a place for the season).

Here's one from this morning before the sun came over the trees. Another sugar maple shedding its leaves makes for a color-rich scene.

Happy #WaterfallWednesday! This is the iconic shot from the viewpoint of Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge just outside of Portland, OR. If you like to shoot waterfalls, this is THE place to go in the US. I shot so many waterfalls that weekend that I almost never wanna shoot another waterfall in my LIFE :P Enjoy!

What is Plus Extract?

It's your DAILY dose of TOP Google Plus photographs, which were chosen by an algorithm that combines automatic steps and manual curation. This means that the DAILY TOPs are NOT based solely on popularity, and users with a small number of followers have a chance to be featured in the TOP. We use Google+ API for the automatic steps; Jarek Klimek is responsible for curation and communication with the authors.

We strongly respect the authors and their rights. +Jarek Klimek contacts every photographer featured in all DAILY TOPs and if any author decides that he/she doesn't want to be featured in the TOP, we respect this absolutely.

Catherine Hall About us and Google+

Google+ has flourished into a bustling online community for photographers – and one reason is the exceptional contribution of early adopters such as Jarek Klimek, Editor of PhotoExtract magazine.

Jarek had the foresight to research the new social network and created an authoritative list of photographers to follow on Google+.

His viral list has not only become one of the top referring resources of photography trailblazers, it is also shared and watched by leaders such as Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble and Darren Rowse.

Jarek has helped introduce the work of great photographers to Google+ photography enthusiasts and I was very excited to share his insights with viewers on TWiT Photo.
